日本語や英語の辞書が選んだ今年の新語・言葉 / Word of the Year 2024 が発表されました。日本語も英語も、ソーシャルメディアで頻繁に使われた言葉が選ばれています。
今回のブログでは、その選ばれた言葉を紹介しつつ、通訳/翻訳者の視点から日本語の「今年の新語」を英訳する場合についてのTipsなども紹介します。（WOKANDAPIXによるPixabayからの画像）

このブログでも引用等で度々お世話になっている辞書 Cambridge Dictionary が選んだ、2024年の Word of the Year は Manifest でした。
日本でも政治に関連した形でよく耳にする言葉 Manifest / マニフェスト。

《「宣言（書）」「声明（書）」の意》
１ 国政選挙では政党が、地方選挙では候補者が政権獲得後に実施する政策を具体的に挙げ、実施時期と予算措置について明確に有権者に提示した文書。政権公約。政策宣言。→選挙公約
２ 「アメリカ独立宣言」「共産党宣言」などの政策宣言のこと。

しかし本来の英語の意味は少し違います。

つまり英語の場合 Manifest / マニフェスト は 合図や行動で○○を明確に示す・○○を明らかにする と言う意味や、日本語的に言うと 夢や目標やXXに魂を吹き込む / 夢や目標やXXをカタチにする と言った意味があります。
また adjective / 形容詞・noun / 名詞で使う場合は、以下の意味となります。

この言葉は、歌手のデュア・リパ / Dua Lipa 、オリンピックのスプリンター ギャビー・トーマス / Gabby Thomas、イングランド代表のストライカー オリー・ワトキンス / Ollie Watkins といった有名人が、2024年の成功を Manifest / マニフェスト=顕在化 / ハッキリと語った事から、自己啓発コミュニティやソーシャルメディアで使用され、その後 主流メディアやそれ以外の場所でも広く使用されるようになった。特にTikTokやその他のソーシャルメディアでは、何百万もの投稿や動画が #manifest というハッシュタグを使用している。

brain rot
(n.) Supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration.
そもそも Rot には 腐る・腐敗 と言った意味がある為、brain rot は「心身や頭脳、メンタルが萎えるような・理性を失う・知能が下がる」と言う状態を表す言葉になります。
Oxford Word of the Year の紹介記事では「質の低いモノ（現在では特にオンラインコンテンツ）の見過ぎ / 過剰摂取によって引き起こされる状態」を表す言葉として brain rot が選ばれたと説明。
2023年から2024年の間に brain rot の使用頻度は230％も増加したと書かれています。

英国（スコットランド） HarperCollins Publishers が出版・運営している Collins English Dictionary が選んだ言葉は Brat でした。

以前は「悪ガキ」と言った意味の言葉だった Brat は、今年2024年 Charli XCX （チャーリーxcx）によって「常識はずれで手に負えない部分もあるけれど、自分に正直で信念のある態度」と言った、ポジティブなニュアンスを含む言葉に再定義され、アメリカ大統領選でも注目を集める言葉となりました。

小学館の国語辞典『大辞泉』が選ぶ今年の新語は「ホワイト案件」でした。
この言葉は、2024年5月18日～11月15日に開催した「大辞泉が選ぶ新語大賞2024」キャンペーンに寄せられた2,731本の投稿の中から選ばれています。

【闇バイト】と対をなす言葉だが、じつは同義語 ──

2023年の『大辞泉』新語大賞、次点の新語が【闇バイト】でした。今年の【ホワイト案件】は、それと対になる新語といえます。いや、【ホワイト案件】は、本当は闇であることを隠して、さも安全な仕事のように見せているだけですから、対ではなく、むしろ同義語なのかもしれません。
昨年までの報道では、犯行グループは悪事と分かって参加しているふうでしたが、今年は凶悪化・頻発化が進む一方、末端の実行犯は【ホワイト案件】だとダマされ、途中からは脅されてやらされている被害者の面もあるということが分かってきました。これらを示す【匿名・流動型犯罪】や、その略称【トクリュウ】という言葉も数多く投稿されました。

さて、この「ホワイト案件」は対となる「闇バイト」を含め、英訳するには非常に難しいニュアンスを含んだ言葉です。
闇バイトは、日系英語メディア等では shady job や Dark Part-Time Work と訳す事が多い様です。
※アルバイト/ Arbeit はドイツ語で仕事や働くことを意味する言葉ですので、日本で使われている意味のアルバイトは、英語では Part-time work / Part-time job となります。

これ以外にも「怪しい仕事」を表す英語表現には working off the books や working under the table / getting paid under the table があります。
working off the books は元々「会計帳簿に載せずに行われる仕事」を指していました。 working under the table / getting paid under the table も同様の意味で、そこから転じて「怪しい仕事」を指す表現として使われています。
さて、今回 大辞泉が選ぶ新語大賞 に選ばれた言葉 ホワイト案件 ですが、 The Japan Times では以下の様に説明しています。

“Howaito anken” (“white jobs”), as opposed to jobs at so-called “black companies,” refers to recruitment listings that appear legitimate but may involve activities that are ethically questionable or even illegal.Recruiters attract individuals seeking easy work since they promise high pay requiring minimal effort. Alleged perpetrators of the recent series of burglaries in the Tokyo metropolitan area are said to have been recruited via so-called white job postings on social media.

ホワイト案件 を闇バイトの英訳表記 shady job や新語大賞の選評にあわせて、直訳的かつコンパクトな言い回しにするのであれば fake legal offer for the shady job と言えなくもないですが、これだけだと特に日本の状況等を知らない人には伝わりづらいと思います。
より丁寧かつ他国の人にも分かりやすく説明するのであれば A type of unscrupulous company that advertise jobs on the internet claiming that it is a well-paying position and involves nothing illegal. 等でしょうか。
unscrupulous company は、いわゆるブラック企業 / 悪徳会社 を意味します。

いずれにしても ホワイト案件 と言うコンパクトな表現は、コンテクスト/背景情報が共有されていて 初めて成り立つ言葉なので、コンテクストを共有しない人にはある程度説明をしないと なかなか伝わりません。

『今年の新語2024』
2024年12月3日に行われた「三省堂 辞書を編む人が選ぶ『今年の新語2024』選考発表会」で大賞に選ばれたのは「言語化」でした。
こちらも応募総数 延べ1,813通の中から選ばれた言葉になります。

今回大賞に選ばれたのは、「言語化」でした。
一見、変哲のない日常語であると意外に思われますが、この語はかつては学術用語として、硬い文章語として使われてきました。したがって、「一般化」や「正当化」を載せる国語辞典も「言語化」は見出し語に立っていませんでした。
それが最近、誰もが使う日常語に変わって来ました。新聞などでの出現件数も2020年代に入って急増しています。〈うまく言語化できないんだけど〉〈言語化が下手すぎる〉〈〔私の代わりに〕言語化ありがとうございます〉など、「言語化」は頻用されています。
日頃見聞きしたものをどのように頭にインプットし、どのようにイメージ化し、ことばに出すか。そういった言語化のプロセスについて、人々が深く考えるようになったとは言えないでしょうか。ことばの力がますます求められる時代の象徴として、「言語化」は大賞にふさわしいと判断しました。

英語の場合「言語化」は verbalize と訳せますが、現在 日本で使われている「言語化」とは少しニュアンスが異なります。より近い表現は put into words でしょうか。
自分の気持ちなどを説明する際に使われる事が増えた「言語化」。その様な状態を英訳するならば、it's hard or difficult to put into words but if I express this feeling I could say ～ と言えるでしょう。
「うまく言語化できないんだけど」は it's difficult to put into words / it's hard to put into words と言えますし、「言語化が下手すぎる」は I'm too bad at putting into words 等とも表現できます。
「言語化」するのが難しい内容を伝えたい場合は it's difficult to put into words but I mean ～ や I'm too bad at putting it into words but I could say ～ 等と言って説明することも出来ます。
因みにホワイトハウス報道官等は、相手の質問や言いたい事を整理・明確にする際に「つまり / 要するに」と言った意味の I think what you're trying to say is ～ と言う表現をよく使います。
この表現を「言語化するのが難しいけれど... 私の言いたい事は要するに～」と言う意味で使いたい場合は it's hard to put into words... I think what I'm trying to say is ～ と言うことが出来ます。
