毎年、年の瀬に発表される「今年の言葉 / Word of the Year 2022」。日本でも「今年の漢字」が先日発表されましたが、今回のブログでは日本語、そして英国の辞書が発表した「Word of the Year 2022」を、幾つかご紹介したいと思います。

今年の漢字
まずは日本語の2022年「今年の言葉」を見ていきましょう。有名なのは今年の漢字ですよね。
これは 公益財団法人 日本漢字能力検定協会 が全国から公募をし、発表しているとのこと。
2022年12月12日 発表された今年の漢字 第1位は「戦」でした。

三省堂
今年の新語 2022
辞書で知られる出版社の三省堂が公募、12月1日に発表した「今年の新語 2022」。こちらは今後、辞書に掲載されてもおかしくない新語が選ばれているとのこと。
大賞は「タイパ」これはタイム・パフォーマンスの略語とのことです。

「タイパ」は 和製英語
三省堂「今年の新語 2022」大賞に選ばれた「タイパ」＝タイム・パフォーマンスは和製英語です。
タイパ＝タイムパフォーマンスを、英語にするとしたら... performance for the timeでしょうか。でも直訳的＝言葉の置き換え的な訳なので、日本語が含むニュアンスは伝わらないかと思います。
「タイパ」に近い言葉、近い英語表現だと皆さんも耳にしたことがある「コスパ」＝コスト・パフォーマンスがあります。
「費用対効果」と訳される事が多いこの言葉ですが、実は「コスト / cost 」には費用以外の意味もあります。

something that is given, needed, or lost in order to get a particular thing: の意味や例文を見ると分かる通り、何かを得る為に費やされるもの、必要とするもの、または犠牲を払うものと言った意味も英語の cost には含まれます。
ですので「タイパ＝タイム・パフォーマンス」的な意味は、日本でも良く耳にするコスト・パフォーマンスに含まれます。
コスト・パフォーマンスは英語でも performance for the cost または ROI / return on investment 等とも言いますが、「経済専門用語」なので一般的な会話ではあまり使われません。
お買い得や、日本語の「コスパ」がいいと言うニュアンスを英語で伝えたい場合は good deal や bang for the buck または best value for 〇〇 などの表現を使うのが一般的です。

教育、言語、地理分野の英国大手出版社 Collins が運営するオンライン辞書 Collins Dictionary が選んだ今年の言葉は permacrisis でした。
permacrisis は permanent と crisis を合わせた言葉になります。
破滅的な出来事、あるいは広い意味でひどい出来事が長く続く不安定な時期と訳したら良いでしょうか。

Word of the Year 2022
Oxford Languages も Word of the Year 2022 を発表しました。投票によって選ばれた「今年の言葉」は Goblin mode でした。
Goblin は西洋の民話やファンタジーに出てくる小鬼の様な妖怪のこと。では Goblin mode とはどんなモードなんでしょう？
Oxford Word of the Year 2022 のページには、最初に「スラング（俗語）的な表現（中略）社会規範を否定する様な、傲慢不遜、怠惰、ずぼら、強欲な行動またはタイプ」との説明があります。

Goblin mode については、BBC LEARNING ENGLISH の動画が分かりやすく説明をしてくれています。
Goblin mode は以前から使われていた言葉ではありますが、コロナ禍を経て以前の様な生活スタイル、つまり朝 身なりを整えて会社に行ったり、外出をしたりと言うのを拒否する行動や気分が強まった為か「今年の言葉」として多くの投票があった様です。

つまり Goblin mode は、お休み明け会社に行くのが億劫な気分 ＝ I'm in Goblin mode なんて使い方が出来る言葉です。

Cambridge Dictionary は、彼らのオンライン辞書で最も検索された言葉を「今年の言葉」として発表しています。
2022年 最も検索された言葉は homer でした。

homer はホームランを意味するアメリカの俗語ですが、「ことば / 単語」のオンライン・パズルゲーム Wordle のプレイヤーの多くが、この言葉を検索したとの事。

つまり homer はアメリカ英語かつ野球のファンや詳しい人には知られたな言葉ではあるけれど、野球が一般的なスポーツではない国の人々や、アメリカ人でも野球を良く知らない人にとっては一般的な言葉ではない為、多くの Wordle を楽しんでいる人が Cambridge Dictionary で検索したって事なんですね。
これ以外にも沢山の辞書やサイトが「今年の言葉 / Word of the Year 2022」を発表しています。2022年を表す言葉、年末年始休みの間に調べてみるのも良いかも知れませんね。
