アメリカのドナルド・トランプ大統領は、2025年4月2日 アメリカが輸入する全ての製品に対する、新たな関税の計画を発表しました。
新たな関税措置は日本時間の4月9日午後1時すぎに発動。しかし4月10日には、この措置を90日間停止すると発表しました。

新たな関税措置
に関する英語表現
2025年4月5日に始まった全ての国や地域を対象にした一律10％の関税引き上げ、及び日本時間の4月9日午後1時すぎに発動した相互関税に関する報道や、4月10日に発表された「90日間停止」に関する記事で使われた英語表現を幾つか紹介します。
関税については、相互関税＝reciprocal tariff を使った記事もありますが、Trump tariff, Trump tariffs, New U.S. tariffs と言った表現も見受けられます。
発動については kick in / kicks in と言う表現を使った見出しが幾つかありました。 また「90日間停止」については pause や suspension, temporary tariff reprieve 等が使われています。

関税 / Tariff の語源
ところで「関税」を意味する英語 Tariff この言葉はどこから来たのでしょうか？
Online Etymology Dictionary で調べてみたところ、以下の説明がありました。（Etymology＝語源）

1590s, "arithmetical table," also "official list or table of customs duties on goods for import or export;" also "a law regulating import duties," from Italian tariffa "tariff, price, assessment," Medieval Latin tarifa "list of prices, book of rates," ultimately from Arabic ta'rif "information, notification, a making known; inventory of fees to be paid," verbal noun from arafa "he made known, he taught." A word passed to English from the commercial jargon of the medieval Mediterranean (compare garble, jar (n.), average (perhaps), orange, tabby, etc.).
「関税」と言う意味で tariff が使われる様になったのは、中世 地中海の商業 業界用語 / commercial jargon からの転用とのこと。
言葉としては、イタリア語の「関税、価格、査定」を意味する tariffa / 中世ラテン語の「価格リスト、料金表」を意味する tarifa を経由している様ですが、アラビア語で「情報、通知、知らせること、支払うべき料金の目録」を意味する ta'rif が語源の様です。
また、この ta'rif は「彼は知らせた、彼は教えた」と言う意味の arafa の動名詞になるそうです。
因みに、先ほど Cambridge dictionary に掲載されている tariff の意味をご紹介しましたが、もちろん英国でも tariff には「関税」と言う意味もありますが、a charge or list of charges either for services / サービスに対する料金・料金表 と言った意味で tariff が使われる事もあります。
