お悔やみを表す英語表現 ～エリザベス女王 崩御に寄せて～

2022年9月8日 夕方 イギリスで発表されたエリザベス二世 英国女王陛下の崩御の一報は、すぐさま世界中を駆け巡りました。心より哀悼の意を表すと共に、今回のブログでは人が亡くなられた時の表現や、弔意を表す英語表現等について少し触れたいと思います。

2022年9月8日 夕方（日本時間 9月9日 午前2時半頃）イギリスの女王陛下 エリザベス二世が崩御された事が発表されました。

ミーハングループも心より哀悼の意を捧げます。

エリザベス女王は英語で Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II と表されます。

正式な肩書は Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith. です。

日本語では、外務省 及び 宮内省の発表では「英国エリザベス二世女王陛下」と表記されています。

また、英国 チャールズ三世 国王陛下の英語表記は His Majesty King Charles III となります。
※ III は three ではなく third または the third

陛下 / 殿下の
英語表現

Her Majesty / His Majesty は日本語に訳すと陛下で、基本的に君主とその配偶者以外には使われません。頭文字をつかってHMと表記される場合もあります。

その他の王室の方々に使われる Royal Highness は、His Royal Highness の場合は殿下、Her Royal Highness の場合は妃殿下と訳されるのが一般的です。こちらも頭文字をつかって HRH と表記される場合もあります。

相手に呼び掛ける場合は、陛下の場合 Your Majesty 、殿下の場合は Your Royal Highness またはシンプルに Sir 、女性の場合は Your Highness または Ma'am となります。

Ma'am は、女王陛下や妃殿下、貴族夫人、または女性の上官や目上の女性に対して使用する呼称です。

なお Monarch は性別にかかわらず君主を意味します。

女王と王妃の違い

チャールズ新国王は即位後初めてスピーチで、妻であるカミラ夫人が Queen consort / 王妃 となること、 そして息子であるウイリアム王子が Prince of Wales / 皇太子になる事を発表しました。

女王と王妃の違い

consort の意味を英英辞典 Cambridge dictionary で調べると、最初に to spend a lot of time in the company of a particular group of people, especially people whose character is not approved of: とありますが、次に a wife or husband, especially of a ruler と書かれています。

Ruler とは国のリーダーの事を意味し、この場合は君主と理解しても良いでしょう。

エリザベス二世女王陛下の夫で 2021年4月に亡くなられたフィリップ殿下も、良く知られる Prince Philip や Duke of Edinburgh（エディンバラ公）の他に consort of Elizabeth II または the consort of the British monarch ＝王配と紹介される事もありました。

つまり consort は君主の配偶者と言う意味になります。

因みに 王妃を意味する Queen consort に対して、君主である「女王」は Queen regnant と表現される場合もあります。

しかし、日本語では「女王」と「王妃」の様に区別して記載する事も出来ますが、今後カミラ夫人は、英語圏ではどの様に呼ばれるのでしょうか？それについては興味深い記事がありました。

亡くなった事を表す
英語表現

英語で「死」は Death 、そして誰かが「亡くなった」ことを明確に表す言葉は Die (died) または Dead である事は、ご存知の事と思います。

しかし、日本語でも「死んだ」ことを「亡くなった」または「逝去された」と表すように、英語でもいくつかの表現があります。

日本語の「亡くなった」または「逝去された」に近い感覚の言葉で、一般的に良く使われるのは passed away でしょうか。

「過ぎていく」ことや「渡す」ことを表す時に使われる passing も、亡くなられたことを表す際に使われます。

APF (Association of Tennis Professionals) の声明で使われている mourn は、人が亡くなった時の悲しみを表す言葉です。また喪に服すことは mourning と表現されます。

has died

Passed away (pass away) や passing 以外にも「この世を去った」と言う意味で leave (left) や gone を使う場合もありますし、「失った」と言う意味で lost や loss を使う場合もあります。

しかし leave (left) や gone または lost や loss は、前後の文脈によって異なる意味になる場合や、ハッキリと亡くなった事が伝わらない場合もあるので注意が必要です。

BBCの、エリザベス女王の崩御を伝える記事の見出しは【Queen Elizabeth II has died】と明確な表現を用いています。

そして記事本文冒頭の要約には Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years. と書かれています。

これはBBCが英国の公共放送機関として、広く、様々な英語レベルの人にもわかりやすい表現を採用している為と思われます。

崩御=demise ?

日本語の「崩御」と言う言葉は 天皇・皇后・皇太后・太皇太后を敬い、その死去を表わす尊敬語 です。

これにあたる英語は demise と紹介されることもありますが、この言葉は君主などにだけ使われる言葉ではなく、また尊敬語と言うニュアンスとも少し異なります。

意味としては人が亡くなったこと以外に、「（これまで有力であった）何かが終わること」「終焉」、そして時には「破綻」を意味する場合もあります。

上記の例文 Huge corporate farms have led to the demise of many small, family-owned farms. は「大規模農業企業の台頭が、家族経営の小さな農家を破綻させた」と訳せます。

つまり demise は、「死」を婉曲に表現する場合に使用される事もありますが、尊敬語と言ったニュアンスは薄く、使い方によってはネガティブな意味を含む場合もあると言うことです。

日本の首相官邸 Websiteでは、岸田首相のエリザベス二世女王陛下の崩御についての会見 を、Press Conference by Prime Minister Kishida on the Passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II と英訳。崩御については the passing of ～ と表現しています。

Vale

オーストラリアのThe Department of Veterans' Affairs （日本語に訳すと退役軍人省）のWebsiteでは、Vale Her Majesty The Queen と言う表現を使って、エリザベス女王の崩御を伝えています。

ご存知の通り、オーストラリアは Commonwealth of Nations （英連邦）の加盟国です。

Valeは 「谷または渓谷」を意味する言葉になりますが、イギリス英語では慣用句から Goodbye / Farewell つまり「さよなら」を意味する場合もあります。

この比喩的表現はシェイクスピアの作品にも使われており、日本語でも人生の浮き沈みを「山あり谷あり」と言う様に、「死」を人生の終着地点・谷＝Vale として捉えた、古くも気品のある詩的な表現と言えるでしょう。

お悔やみを表す
英語表現

お悔やみを表す表現は 以前にも本ブログでご紹介しましたが、残された方への言葉として英語では our/my sincere condolences to 〇〇（you and your family） または our/my sincerest condolences to 〇〇 や our/my deepest condolences to 〇〇 を使用するのが公の場では一般的です。

また our/my thoughts (and prayers) are with you や our/my thoughts (and prayers) are with you during this painful time 等も、公的なシチュエーションでは良く使われます。

しかしソーシャルメディアなどでは、誰かの死を悼む際に R.I.P / Rest in Peace 〇〇 （〇〇は 亡くなられた方の名前等）と書く場合もありますし、親しい間柄の人にお悔やみを伝えるさいには I'm so sorry for your loss. と言う場合もあります。

また、亡くなられた場合だけではありませんが、不幸なニュースが起きたと聞いた場合は I'm sorry to hear that. と言う場合もありますし、残された家族などには my deepest sympathy to you and your family や、deepest sympathies are with ○○ などと言う場合もあります。

もちろん、それぞれの国や人の宗教観や文化によって、死の捉え方は異なります。

それにより相手に伝える「お悔やみの言葉」も気を付けた方が良い場合もありますし、マナー等を知っておくのも大事なことだと思います。

特に相手がどの様な宗教観や価値観を持っているか分からない場合は、無難な表現を選ぶのもヒトツの手です。

でも、一番大事なのは相手を想う気持ちではないでしょうか。

エリザベス女王の在位70周年を祝うため、2022年6月に行われたプラチナ・ジュビリーの動画で共演した「くまのパディントン（Paddington Bear）」は、高位や目上の女性に対して使用する呼称 Ma'am を使って、シンプルかつ心のこもった言葉を、お悔やみとして送っています。
