parasocial adjective
involving or relating to a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know, a character in a book, film, TV series, etc., or an artificial intelligence.
Parasocial / パラソーシャル、または Parasocial relationship / パラソーシャル・リレーションシップ 及び Parasocial interaction / パラソーシャル・インタラクション については、一般的に「画面越しの有名人やキャラクターなどに対して、一方的に親近感や関係性を抱く心理現象」と説明される事が多いです。
この言葉は、アメリカの社会学者たちが1956年に作り出した言葉で、当初はテレビに登場する芸能人との関係性を説明するために用いられとのこと。
そんな古くからある言葉 Parasocial を Cambridge dictionary が今年の言葉に選んだ理由は、今までの様な有名人に対する一方的な感情・関係性だけではなく、ChatGPT のような対話型AIに対してユーザーが抱く感情や関係に対する懸念が高まったからの様です。

What does it say about 2025?
In 2025, following the release of personalized AI chatbots by multiple companies in the preceding year, public discussion about the psychological impact of parasocial relationships expanded from being mainly about influencers and celebrities to including the benefits and dangers of chatbots. These two stories converged in the summer of 2025.

通訳者からのTips
Parasocial でも使われている 接頭語（接頭辞）の para / para prefix ですが、ラテン語及びギリシア語の para に由来する言葉で、「横に」「反対に」「上に」と言った意味がコアとなっている言葉です。
語源 para English Etymology : para（天才英単語）
例えば paralegal 日本語では「法律事務職員」等と訳される言葉ですが、イメージとしては弁護士の横に居て、法律に関連する事務＝一般事務とは異なる専門的領域において弁護士を補助する人を意味します。
英語では paraprofessional という表現もよく聞きます。オーストラリア翻訳・通訳資格認定機関 National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters 略称 NAATI では、全てのリクエストに対応可能な翻訳者の一段下の翻訳者（全てには対応不可）の事を paraprofessional と呼んでいます。正会員と補助会員の差と言ったら分かりやすいでしょうか。
Parasocial の para は、横＝～のそばに / ～似たと言う解釈の para と social が組み合わさって出来た言葉で、「疑似的な社会 / 社会的な構造や関係性が擬似的である状況」つまり Cambridge dictionaryのWord of the Year 2025 で説明されている意味になります。
因みにParalympics の para は、横＝平行・沿うと言う解釈にて採用されたとのことです。1985年、IOCは国際調整委員会（ICC）がオリンピック年に開催する国際身体障がい者スポーツ大会を 「Paralympics（パラリンピックス）」と名乗ることに同意した（オリンピックスという言葉を名乗ることは禁止された）。
しかし、従来のパラリンピックという言葉は、対麻痺者のオリンピックという意味であったことから、身体障がい者の国際大会になじまなかったため、ギリシア語の接頭語であるパラ＝Para（沿う、並行）＋Olympic（オリンピック）と解釈することになった。

Vibe coding
イギリスのハーパーコリンズ社が発行する Collins Dictionary が選んだ「今年の言葉 / Word of the Year 」は Vibe coding でした。
‘Vibe coding’,an emerging software development that turns natural language into computer code using AI, has been named Collins’ Word of the Year 2025. The term was popularised by Andrej Karpathy, former Director of AI at Tesla and founding engineer at OpenAI, to describe how AI enables creative output while he could “forget that the code even exists”.

「雰囲気コーディング」等と訳される Vibe coding は、AI を使用して自然言語をコンピュータコードに変換する新しいソフトウェア開発手法の事です。
この言葉を選んだ理由をCollins dictionary はブログにて以下の様に説明しています。

Rage bait
続いて英語辞典 Oxford が選んだ「今年の言葉 / Word of the Year 」をご紹介しましょう。選ばれたのは Rage bait でした。
この Oxford が選んだ今年の言葉を紹介する朝日新聞の記事では「怒りのえさ」と Rage bait を訳していましたが、炎上を招く、アンチ感情を煽ると言った意味になります。

オンライン上の投票で選ばれる Oxford の今年の言葉。最終候補となっていたのは、選ばれた rage bait 以外は aura farming そして biohack でしたが、3万人が投票した結果 rage bait になったとのこと。
日本ではオンライン上で人々を不快にさせたり、怒りを意図的に引き起こす事で世間の注目を集め、売り上げや知名度を伸ばす投稿の事を「炎上マーケティング」等と言ったりしますが、 rage bait は似た様な意味の言葉になります。

最後にご紹介するのは、オーストラリアの Macquarie Dictionary が Word of the Year for 2025 に選んだ言葉 AI SLOP です。
AI SLOP
noun Colloquial low-quality content created by generative AI, often containing errors, and not requested by the user.
‘We understand now in 2025 what we mean by slop — AI generated slop, which lacks meaningful content or use. While in recent years we’ve learnt to become search engineers to find meaningful information, we now need to become prompt engineers in order to wade through the AI slop. Slop in this sense will be a robust addition to English for years to come. The question is, are the people ingesting and regurgitating this content soon to be called AI sloppers?’

簡単に言ってしまうと AI が生成した質の悪いコンテンツ の事を意味する言葉が AI SLOP です。大量に生成されることが特徴で、スパムに似た侮蔑的な意味合いもあるとのこと。
確かに最近ではネット上に表示されたコンテンツが本当か否か（AIで作られたモノか否か）、気をつけなければならない状況になっています。
Slopとは？
Cambridge dictionary で Slop を調べると Slop noun: liquid or wet food waste, especially when it is fed to animals: と言う説明が出てきます。
つまり、人が食べない様な液体または湿った食品廃棄物（動物に与える様な：昔は人の食べ残しや食品廃棄物を、飼っている動物や家畜等に与えていた時代がありました）と言う事です。
Slopは擬音語で、液体または湿った残飯を おたま等で すくった時の音になります。今でも英語ネイティブは、これを「全然おいしくない音（モノ）」と解釈します。
ですので AI Slop は、AIによって作られた全然おいしくない、残飯/食品廃棄物の様なモノ＝AI が生成した質の悪いコンテンツと言う意味になります。

ネットまたはAI関連用語
今回ご紹介した各社英語辞典が選ぶ「今年の言葉 / Word of the Year 」は、全てインターネットまたは AI に関連する言葉でした。
それはAI 及びインターネットが、現在の社会に良くも悪くも多大なる影響を与えているからでしょう。The AI Bubble Is About To Burst / AIバブルはまもなく崩壊する 等と言うタイトルの動画も公開されていますが、先の事はわかりません。
いずれにせよ通訳・翻訳業界においては、2026年はより一層 AIとの共存が求められる年になりそうです。本ブログでも、通訳者・翻訳者としてAI時代をどの様に乗り越えるか？どの様にAIと共存していくか？そう言った情報を出来るだけお伝えしていければと思っています。
