第47代アメリカ大統領にドナルド・トランプ氏が再び就任しました。今回のブログではこの就任式及びスピーチで使われた英語表現や、大統領選の時に生まれた新しい英語表現等についてご紹介したいと思います。（pixabayからの画像）
トランプ大統領の就任
inauguration
2025年1月20日（日本時間1月21日）アメリカ・ワシントンDCにて、第47代アメリカ大統領となったトランプ氏の就任式が行われました。
英語で就任は inauguration 、就任式は inauguration だけでも式典まで意味する場合もありますが、より明確にするのであれば inauguration ceremony となります。
また inauguration は「就任」や「就任式」以外にも、「何かが正式に開始・始まること」や「新時代・体制、スタイル、活動の始まり」と言った意味もあります。

なお、就任スピーチのことは The Inaugural Address と英語では表現されます。
Address と言うと住所やメールアドレス等を思い出す人が多いと思いますが、正式なスピーチ / a formal speech も Address と英語では言います。

Golden Age とは
トランプ大統領は「アメリカの黄金期（黄金時代）が 今 始まる」と、就任スピーチの冒頭で語りました。
先程紹介した The White House のサイトから原文を引用、どの様な流れで発せられたのか見てみましょう。

Golden Age / 黄金期・黄金時代 とは、イメージの通り「黄金の様に輝く時代」のこと。

この「黄金時代 / Golden Age 」は、英語や日本語以外でも同様の意味で使われる慣用的な表現で、「よき時代」や「期待される時代」等と訳すこともできます。
sanewashing とは
アメリカ大統領就任初日から様々な大統領令 / presidential executive orders に署名を行い、世界中を驚かせたトランプ氏。
ワシントン市内にあるキャピタル・ワン・アリーナ / Capital One Arena にて支持者を前に署名する姿にも、多くの人が注目しました。
さて、そのトランプ新大統領がハリス氏と争った大統領選の時から、メディア等で使われ始めた言葉があります。
それが sanewashing です。sane とは「正気の、気の確かな、健全な」と言った意味の言葉で、「非常識な、あり得ない、常軌を逸している」と言った意味の insane の対義語になります。

その sane と、「洗う」や「洗濯」と言った意味の washing をあわせた造語が sanewashing になります。
Cambridge dictionary には まだこの言葉は載っていませんが、Collins dictionary には 新語の提案 / New Word Suggestion として紹介されていました。

日本では、この言葉は文脈にもよりますが「浄化」や「補正」、または「意味不明な内容を（言葉などを足して）意味が通じる様にする」と言った意味で「意訳」と言う表現が、訳語として使用されています。
